How Long Do Dental Fillings Last?

A dental filling is a treatment technique used to fill the hole or cavity that you have in your teeth. To do this, the dentist will remove the damaged tissue and then fill in the area with a dental filling. This hole or decay forms after the bacteria in the teeth meets with the starches from food and drinks. When these two come together, they form an acid that erodes the surface of teeth.

There are several dental filling materials available today. Dentists can make fillings of composite resin, amalgam gold, or even porcelain. However, most people prefer amalgam and porcelain for their fillings. Dentists make composite resin filling material and porcelain filling material to match your tooth color. However, a porcelain filling will last longer than a composite resin filling.

How Long Do Fillings Last?

Ideally, fillings can last up to 10 years or more. The longevity of your filling will depend on different factors such as the material used, dental hygiene, decay around the filling even your eating habits.

Factors Affecting the Longevity of Dental Fillings

As stated before, there are several factors that will determine how long your dental fillings will last. These include;

Dental Hygiene

Your dental hygiene will play a big part in how long your fillings will last. Your dental hygiene practices are not only important for the longevity of your fillings, but also for the general health of your teeth. If you do not keep your teeth healthy, then new decay can grow around your filling, which will lead to even bigger problems.

Eating Habits

One major reason you develop tooth decay is from consuming sugary foods and beverages. Once these sugary foods and beverages come into contact with bacteria in your teeth, they form an acid that erodes the tooth. Thus, if you want your fillings to last longer, stay away from sugary foods and beverages.

Material Used

The material used in your dental filling will also determine how long the filling will last. Even though each type of material has its cons and pros, most people prefer amalgam and porcelain materials because of their durability.

The durability of your filling will heavily depend on the type of material that you pick. However, not every filling material is best suited for you. Therefore, it is important to consult with your dentist who can guide you on the healthiest material for you that will not cause any problems.
