Top Excuses For Not Flossing and Why You Need To Stop It

Dentists and hygienists preach about it at every appointment. But when it comes down to actually incorporating it into our daily routine, it often falls by the wayside. I hear all sorts of reasons why people skip this crucial step in their oral hygiene. I'm here to debunk those excuses and explain why flossing teeth is non-negotiable for a healthy mouth.

"It Takes Too Much Time"

This is probably the most common excuse I hear. "I'm too busy," people say. But honestly, flossing teeth only takes a few minutes each day. Think about how much time you spend scrolling through social media. You can definitely carve out a few minutes to protect your teeth and gums. Consider it an investment in your long-term health! Keep dental floss in a convenient location, like next to your toothbrush or on your nightstand, to make it easier to remember and incorporate into your routine.

"My Gums Bleed When I Floss"

Bleeding gums can be alarming, but it's usually not a reason to stop flossing. In fact, it's often a sign that you need to floss more! Bleeding gums are often a symptom of gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease. Gingivitis is caused by plaque and bacteria buildup along the gumline. Regular flossing helps remove this buildup and reduce inflammation. If your gums bleed when you first start flossing, don't be discouraged. Keep at it! The bleeding should decrease as your gums become healthier. If the bleeding persists after a week or two of consistent flossing, it’s best to consult with a dental professional.

"I Don't Know How To Floss Properly"

If you're unsure about the proper technique, ask your dentist or hygienist to demonstrate it at your next appointment. There are also plenty of helpful videos online that can guide you. The key is to gently slide the dental floss between your teeth and use a "C" shape to hug each tooth and clean below the gumline. Don't saw back and forth, as this can irritate your gums.

"My Teeth Are Too Close Together"

Some people believe that their teeth are too close together to floss effectively. While it might be a little more challenging, it's definitely still possible – and important! Try using waxed dental floss, which slides more easily between tight spaces. There are also floss picks available, which can be easier to maneuver in tight areas.

"I Brush My Teeth, Isn't That Enough?"

Brushing is essential for cleaning the surfaces of your teeth, but it can't reach the areas between your teeth and under the gumline where plaque and bacteria thrive. These are the areas where cavities and gum disease are most likely to develop. Flossing complements brushing by removing debris from these hard-to-reach places. Think of brushing and flossing as a dynamic duo working together to keep your mouth healthy!

"Flossing is Painful"

If you experience pain when flossing, it could be due to improper technique, inflamed gums, or an underlying dental issue. Make sure you're using gentle pressure and the correct technique. If the pain persists, schedule an appointment with your dentist to rule out any other problems.

In conclusion, while these excuses might seem valid at first glance, the benefits of developing good flossing habits far outweigh any perceived inconvenience. Consistent flossing is a crucial component of maintaining a healthy mouth, preventing cavities and gum disease, and contributing to your overall well-being. So, ditch the excuses and make flossing a daily habit!
