What to Do About a Cracked Molar Until We Can See You

It might happen while you’re eating something crunchy, or you might not even remember when it happened at all! The important thing is to take action to protect the tooth and minimize discomfort until you can get to our office. A cracked molar, especially, can be problematic because these teeth handle a lot of chewing force. Here's what you should do:

Immediate First Aid

The very first thing to do when you suspect you have a cracked tooth is to gently rinse your mouth with warm water. This helps remove any food particles that might be trapped in or around the crack, which can cause irritation and pain. Look carefully in the mirror to see if you can identify the crack. Sometimes it’s obvious, but other times it’s more subtle.

If you're experiencing pain, an over-the-counter pain reliever, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help. Follow the package instructions carefully. A cold compress applied to your cheek near the affected tooth can also reduce swelling and discomfort. Apply the compress for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day.

Protecting Your Tooth

Until you can see us, it's crucial to protect the cracked tooth from further damage. Avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where the crack is located. Stick to softer foods that require minimal chewing. Things like yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, and smoothies are good options. Stay away from hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that could worsen the crack or cause more pain.

Be mindful of the temperature of your food and drinks. Extreme hot or cold temperatures can sometimes increase sensitivity in a cracked tooth. Try to eat and drink things that are lukewarm.

Maintaining Excellent Oral Care

Even with a cracked tooth, maintaining excellent oral care is essential to prevent infection and further complications. Continue to brush your teeth gently twice a day, paying special attention to the area around the cracked tooth. Floss carefully to remove any plaque or food debris that might be trapped. Consider using an antibacterial mouthwash to help keep the area clean and reduce the risk of infection.

Understanding the Importance of Prompt Care

A cracked tooth won't heal on its own. In fact, it can worsen over time if left untreated. What starts as a small crack can eventually lead to a larger fracture, exposing the inner layers of the tooth to bacteria and potentially causing an infection or even tooth loss.

That’s why it’s so important to contact us as soon as possible. We can evaluate the extent of the crack and recommend the best course of action. Delaying treatment can lead to more extensive and costly procedures down the road.

Restoration Dentistry Options

We will carefully assess the cracked tooth to determine the best way to restore it. The type of restoration dentistry needed will depend on the size and location of the crack, as well as the overall health of the tooth. Options might include a filling, a crown, or, in more severe cases, a root canal and crown. Our goal is to restore the tooth's function, alleviate any pain or sensitivity, and protect it from further damage.

Remember, taking care of a cracked tooth requires prompt action and diligent oral care. By following these steps, you can minimize discomfort and protect your tooth until we can provide the necessary treatment. We are here to help you get back to a healthy and comfortable smile!
