After getting a new dental crown, your first thought may be to try to figure out what you should do to maintain it. After all, it looks very much like your natural tooth (more or less, depending on the material it is crafted from). And it certainly should function exactly like your natural tooth did. So, do you need to do anything special to maintain it? The answer is yes, and no. Here is more information.Continue Your Normal Oral Hygiene PracticesIn one sense, you need not change anything at all. Continue to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss once a day. This will help your natural teeth, of course, and it will also help keep your dental crown in place. While the crown itself cannot experience tooth decay, the tooth to which it is adhered certainly can. As such, it is vital for you to continue providing your teeth with the proper care after you have had a dental implant put in. There Will be Some Limitations to Your Diet Unfortunately, no matter how well the dental crown might be fused onto your tooth, the fact of the matter is that the crown is not a part of the tooth. This means that, given the right set of circumstances, the crown could pull off of the tooth. To help keep this from happening, you may need to adjust your diet slightly. You should avoid sticky foods such as hard candy, saltwater taffy, and beef jerky. Especially with the candy, the food could end up pulling on your tooth. If the suction is great enough, it is possible for the crown to be pulled off of the tooth. Also, avoid crunching ice. Just as this can damage your teeth, so too can it damage your dental crown. By taking these steps, you can help ensure the longevity of your dental crown. So, make sure to keep this information in mind as you make your dietary choices. |
