Dental implants are a great way to restore your mouth back to its natural state, and they can be effective at making sure your mouth stays healthy. However, many people believe that after getting dental implants installed that they may not need to take care of their mouth in the same way they would need to do with natural teeth. Unfortunately, this isn't true. Taking care of your mouth after receiving dental implants is just as important as taking care of your mouth with natural teeth—perhaps more so. What To Keep An Eye Out ForAfter having dental implants installed, your mouth is not resistant to the effects of bacteria in your mouth. Dental implants can still suffer damage with excess bacterial growth. Bacterial growth also has the chance to cause an infection in your gums, especially right after dental implants are installed, so it's important to keep a healthy mouth at all times. When your gums become infected and you have dental implants, there is a strong possibility that they will fail. Failed dental implants are not only painful, they can be extremely difficult to deal with. In most cases when there is a gum infection and dental implants are involved, the dental implants will need to be removed to recover properly. When a dental implant is rejected by your body, there can be serious consequences to your oral health. Once dental implants are removed because of infection, it can be some time before you are able to have new ones installed. In extreme cases, it may even be impossible to reinstall dental implants. It takes time for an infection to heal, and during this time, you may need to have a lot of dental work done to prevent the infection from spreading.
