Oral Health Issues Can Become Overall Health IssuesWhen discussing oral health issues, it might be surprising to know that there is a link when it comes to the damages that happen in your mouth and the damages those oral problems can cause.

Oral Health Issues Are More Severe Than They Seem

Taking care of your oral health is more important than it looks like on the surface. One might think that whatever happens to the mouth ends there, but this is not the case. We have provided a few examples of how oral health issues can cause or make conditions worse as diabetes.

Diabetes

There has been a link shown between gum diseases such as periodontal disease and diabetes. Diabetics are at increased risk of having oral health issues such as gingivitis and periodontal disease, but the relationship works the other way as well. Gum disease in turn raises the blood sugar, which is of course, dangerous for anyone, but especially for those suffering from diabetes. We strongly urge both diabetics and non-diabetics to take excellent care of their oral health.

High Blood Pressure and Strokes

Like diabetes, gum disease is also related to high blood pressure that can, in turn, lead to strokes. Bacteria are able to move to other parts of the body if allowed and studies have shown that this is indeed the case when it comes to explaining the link between gum disease and high blood pressure.

Preventing Oral Health Issues

The best way to prevent oral health issues is to prevent bacteria in your mouth from getting out of control. Brushing twice a day, avoiding smoking, eating a healthy balanced diet, limiting alcohol consumption, and flossing before bed are all ways to significantly limit your risk of oral infections.
