Replacing Your Toothbrush Can Help Keep Your Teeth Cleaner
Posted on 6/7/2021 by Dr. Nick Raptou
To keep your teeth cleaner and decay-free, replace your toothbrush every 3 months, or when you see signs that it is frayed.
Looking for Signs of Toothbrush Wear
When you use a toothbrush, you should replace your manual toothbrush every 3 months, or switch the toothbrush head on an electric device every 3 months. You may need to replace the toothbrush sooner, especially if the brush looks worn or frayed. If you notice that your brush looks worn after about a month's time, you are probably brushing too hard. If this happens, let us know and we can provide instructions for brushing so your toothbrush lasts longer.
Why You Need to Use a Toothbrush that Does Not Show Signs of Wear
You really will not get the full benefits of using a toothbrush that has worn down. When a toothbrush wears down, some of the coating on the bristles also wears away. When this occurs, you literally can scratch the enamel on your teeth. At this point, you are removing more than plaque and residue. Therefore, using a toothbrush that shows little, if any, signs of wear is highly preferred. To effectively remove plaque and food particles, you need to use a soft toothbrush that has been approved by the ADA with a brush head that is neither bent nor frayed.
Another Reason to Replace Your Toothbrush
You also need to replace your toothbrush if someone in your household has been sick with an infectious ailment, such as the flu or strep throat, Using the same toothbrush can spread the infection. Whether your toothbrush has worn down or someone in your home has been sick, make sure you are always using a toothbrush that is in good shape, or has not been exposed to infectious bacteria.
