Dental fillings which are often called tooth fillings is a process where our experienced dentist will fill a damaged tooth with material to report it. By inserting a filling, the dentist will take away any discomfort by also restoring the functionality of the tooth. Once the filling is inserted, the patient will not notice the difference in the tooth from their other teeth.
In a majority of cases, a filling is inserted due to cavities. It is a common procedure where our dentist will remove any cavity that is within the tooth and then insert the filling material. In the procedure for this, one of our dentists will remove the cavity. The reason for fillings is because once a cavity is removed it leaves a gap which could be harmful to oral health which is why the material is used to close the gap.
Another common reason to have a filling is because a patient might chip their tooth. This feeling will restore the chipped area and make the tooth hole again.
Different Types of Dental Fillings
There are different types of fillings depending on what the patient needs for their specific procedure. Along with the different types of fillings, there are different materials that our dentist utilize. We will ensure that we pick the correct options for your needs.
The most common and popular dental filling is the amalgam. With this filling it is made up of multiple materials including mercury that is combine with other materials like copper, silver or tin. Due to these materials being flexible, this makes the mixture soft and easily manipulated into the space of the tooth where a filling is needed. A benefit to this type of filling is that it is cheap, restores functionality and is very durable.
There is also the composite filling or what is also referred to the white filling. With this filling even though it is white it also provides the dentist with the option to match the color of your current teeth to the filling material. This option is also inexpensive.
If you and your dentist conclude that these two are not the right fit for you, then we might recommend an inlay or overlay. They are more beneficial for larger spaces and are made of metal or porcelain. If you have any more questions regarding fillings, please feel free to reach out to us.
