How Long Should You Brush?

How Long Should You Brush?Brushing your teeth is very important as it is the foundation of a good dental health routine. It helps eliminate plaque, which is a culprit of gum disease, decay, and even tooth loss. Often, how you brush, the type of toothbrush you use, and the length and frequency of brushing are crucial factors to consider.

How Long to Brush your Teeth

Dental professionals recommend that you brush your teeth for not less than two minutes every brushing session. You may think that you brush that long, however, you would be surprised if you set a timer. Most of us only brush our teeth for a minute or even less, which is not good. Besides brushing for at least two minutes, you also have to brush twice or thrice a day. Ensure you brush after every meal.

Tooth Brushing Technique

You need to ensure you get all over the teeth, inside and out, top, front, and sides. When doing the sides, ensure you get to the gumline. It is also important that you use a gentle touch while holding the toothbrush at an angle of 45 degrees. When doing the front and sides, ensure you move the brush gently, making circular strokes.

The Toothbrush

While brushing, ensure you use a pea-sized squeeze of fluoridated toothpaste. When purchasing your toothbrush, get one with a head that is not too big, particular if you have a small mouth. The toothbrush should fit easily between the gums and cheeks. Never mind about the handle too much, just ensure it feels comfortable while in the hand. Do not forget to replace the toothbrush every so often, probably after every three months. Lastly, do not forget to floss. Want to learn more about tooth brushing and flossing?
