A good patient-doctor relationship facilitates patient satisfaction by helping them clearly understand their health problems and the diagnosis available—the patient-doctor relationship functions as the foundation for health care. The ultimate goal of fostering a good relationship is to achieve better clinical outcomes in treatment.

What influences an excellent patient-doctor relationship

A doctor's approach to communicating the patient's health condition facilitates good communication. This also determines how treatment decisions are shared and set between the two. The patient must also be able to trust their healthcare provider. Trusting in the expertise and goodwill of the physician helps gain satisfaction from diagnosis. A doctor should communicate effectively using verbal and nonverbal cues to help build a strong relationship. Miscommunication or an unhealthy relationship with the patient could have effects like hopelessness, reduced patient satisfaction, and low expectations from the treatment.

Outcomes of a good relationship

Collaborative and efficient communication between the doctor and physician helps the two work as partners to achieve the desired health goals. A positive relationship encourages the patient to be actively involved in their health status, including adherence to treatments. This relationship also allows the patient to ease anxiety and disclose information that they may not have disclosed. This helps the physician to give an accurate diagnosis of the condition.
A good rapport has improved the quality of life and health as it facilitates a collaborative and two-way relationship and communication. Ethically, a physician is inclined to foster a good relationship with the patient. If a patient feels overpowered and vulnerable, they have the right to walk away from that practitioner as their needs should always come first. A patient must ensure they trust their physician as lack of could significantly affect their treatment and recovery.
