Tobacco and Oral Health

Posted on 11/7/2022 by Dr. Nick Raptou
Tobacco and Oral HealthSmoking tobacco interferes with the functioning of the gum cells thus making them vulnerable to bacterial infection which causes dental problems. Although cigarettes are the most commonly used form of tobacco, there are other forms which include smoked and smokeless tobacco which also have adverse effects on oral health. The dental problems caused as a result of smoking include bad mouth odor, increased levels of plaque and tartar, tooth discoloration, and a lowering in the success rate of conducted dental surgery procedures.

Are smokeless tobacco safer for your oral health?

They are not safe for your gums since they contain a bigger composition of chemicals. Smokeless tobacco irritates your gums causing them to pull away. When the gums pull away it exposes your teeth root which in turn increases the risk of tooth decay. This exposure makes your teeth roots sensitive to hot and cold foods making it uncomfortable for you to eat or drink.

Additionally, flavors added to the smokeless tobacco contain levels of sugars that also encourage tooth decay. Its composition is also made of sand and grit which can lead to the wearing down of your teeth.

Symptoms of smoking resulting from smoking?

When you are a smoker you can always look out for symptoms such as discharge from your gums, red and swollen gums, bad breath, and loose teeth. If you experience such symptoms you can always visit our dentist and schedule regular checkups.

If you smoke tobacco it's always important to look after your oral health to avoid periodontal and gum diseases. You can also do regular visits to our dentist and be advised on the measures you can undertake to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Similarly, you can also speak to our doctor about the risks resulting from smoking tobacco.
