Does the smile that you see in the mirror make you feel happy and confident, or does the shape of your teeth make you feel as though your smile is not quite as good as it could be? If you struggle with teeth that are uneven or overlap slightly, then you may be a good candidate for cosmetic contouring. For patients who have teeth that jut in front of another, or have a tooth that is noticeably longer, we here at Raptou Family Dental can carefully and gently shave down a portion of the tooth to help your smile be straight and even again.
What is Cosmetic Contouring and Am I a Good Candidate for It?
Also known as an enameloplasty, cosmetic contouring is a safe, easy, and painless outpatient procedure that can be completed in our office in as little as a half hour. It is a fantastic treatment option for our patients who have minor cosmetic concerns about the appearance of their teeth. Unlike more invasive procedures, cosmetic contouring delivers immediate results, allowing us to send satisfied patients on their way on the same day as their appointment. The same cannot be said for more intensive orthodontic treatment options, that is for sure!
During cosmetic contouring, we will first begin by thoroughly assessing your oral health to determine that you are a good candidate for this procedure. Good candidates have healthy teeth and no gum disease or tooth decay on the affected tooth. We may advise dental X-rays before we proceed to ensure that there are no hidden issues on the tooth. We will also offer anesthetic to patients who have sensitive teeth, but usually, no local anesthesia is necessary as we only touch the very outer part of your dental enamel.
To contour your teeth, we will use a special type of device designed specifically to contour teeth. This will remove a small, conservative amount of your enamel. We will be extremely precise when we contour your teeth since it takes only a very small amount to get dramatic results. Your dental enamel is less than 3 millimeters thick in most places.
For many of our patients, we need to remove less than just one or two millimeters of the tooth to get the tooth to the desired shape. We will use a pen to mark the site of the treatment to ensure that we do not remove too much material. Once we remove the desired amount of enamel, we will then smooth and polish the tooth to give it an attractive appearance.
