Dental Implants Vs. Dentures

Implants Vs. Dentures at Raptou Family Dental, Columbus, OHWhen it comes to replacing missing teeth, there are two very good options available today—dental implants and dentures. While everyone understands what dentures are, not so many people understand what Dental Implants are, and the differences between the two. At Raptou Family Dental, we want to make sure that you understand what makes each of these tooth replacement options special so that you can make an informed decision when it comes time to replace your teeth.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement option that can replace a single tooth, several consecutive missing teeth, even a full arch of teeth with functional prosthetic teeth. Dental implant restorations look like natural teeth and restore your ability to eat and speak as you did before tooth loss.

Dental Implant Pros

Dental implants offer a lot of great things to patients who have experienced tooth loss. Dental implants often permanent tooth replacement for the rest of your life. You don’t have to worry about dental implants coming loose, or having to be removed to be cleaned. They restore health to the bone in your jaw through the healing process known as osseointegration. Dental implants give you back the ability to eat and speak as normal.

Dental Implant Cons

Dental implants require at least two months to heal, and depending on the oral health of the patient, can take up to six months to completely heal. Because dental implants require a surgical procedure to be placed, there is a high up-front cost. While dental implants can last you a lifetime, many patients find that the high up-front cost of dental implants is prohibitive. For patients who have been missing teeth for an extended time, bone grafting surgeries may be required before we can place dental implants.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable prosthetic teeth that restore your ability to eat and speak. Dentures are made on acrylic that resembles a portion of your gums and all of your teeth. There are full dentures that replace all the teeth in your mouth and partial dentures which can replace a single tooth or several missing teeth.

Dentures Pros

Dentures are a quick and cost-effective way to replace teeth that have been lost. It only requires two trips to our office to have a set of dentures made, and no surgery is required.

Dentures Cons

Dentures come with quite a few drawbacks when compared to Dental Implants. Dentures must be held in place with denture adhesive, which is a sticky paste that is made to hold them in place throughout the day. Denture adhesive is known to come loose and may need to be applied several times a day. Dentures must be removed to be cleaned and while you sleep at night. It is common for dentures to warp and become ill-fitting over the course of several years, if this happens to your dentures you will need to have a new set made. Dentures are made to stay wet, so when you remove them for an extended period, you have to place them in a glass of water or a denture soaking solution.
