First VisitTo keep your mouth healthy, regular brushing and flossing, along with dental visits for cleanings and exams, are important. This is true for everyone, including your child. However, your child’s mouth is very different from yours. It is constantly growing and developing. Their mouth needs to be taken care of to ensure that it develops properly. To do this, your child needs specialized dental care. At Raptou Family Dental, we offer the services needed to monitor and optimize your child’s oral health. Here is what to expect when it comes to their very first visit. When Should My Child’s First Visit Take Place?Your child should be seen by a dentist earlier than you might think. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that your child be seen six months following the eruption of their first tooth, or by the age of one, whichever comes first. However, for most families unless there is a specific concern, we recommend seeing your child at the age of three. What Should I Expect at My Child’s First Visit?Your child’s very first visit is usually quite short. After we bring you to the exam room, we may ask that you sit in the chair and hold your child on your lap. This will help your child to remain comfortable. We will do a quick examination of your child’s mouth, looking at their teeth and gums. Their jaw will also be checked for alignment. If necessary, we will clean their teeth. After we have looked over your child’s mouth, we will discuss it with you. Topics may include:
What About X-rays?Children will usually have their very first set of x-rays by the time they are six years old. This is usually the time when the adult teeth begin to emerge. The exact time at which your child will get their first x-rays depends upon them. If your child is more prone to cavities and other issues, they will have x-rays sooner than those who don’t have these problems. We use digital x-ray technology to capture images of the interior of your child’s mouth. Digital x-rays greatly reduce your child’s exposure to radiation, while providing us with valuable insight into their mouth. Starting your child’s oral care routine early will help to ensure the health of their mouth, and set them up for good oral health well into adulthood.
