Professional Dental Cleanings
Columbus, OH

Dental cleanings at Raptou Family Dental in Columbus, OH.The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you brush at least twice a day and that you floss at least once every day.

However, your at-home oral care routine is just a part of maintaining a healthy mouth. With professional teeth cleanings at Raptou Family Dental, we can help you to keep your oral health in tip-top shape.

How Important Are Professional Cleanings?

During the course of the day, plaque (the sticky substance that forms on your teeth) and oral bacteria build up in your mouth. While they are both naturally occurring, they are both quite dangerous in excess amounts.

Regular brushing and flossing help to keep both at bay. However, even if you brush twice a day and floss once a day, there are some areas of your mouth that are harder to reach than others. When these spaces are missed consistently, plaque and the acids produced by oral bacteria can begin to erode the enamel of your teeth. They can also irritate your gum tissue, causing it to become inflamed.

With regular professional cleanings at Raptou Family Dental, we can find and reach those hard to reach spaces, remove the buildup and prevent serious oral health issues from occurring.

What’s the Difference Between At-Home Care and Professional Cleanings?

At Raptou Family Dental, we recommend that you have at least two dental cleanings every year. This may not seem like much, but those two visits are critical. When plaque is left to sit on your teeth for too long, it hardens into tartar, and tartar cannot be removed with your toothbrush.

The erosion caused by plaque and oral bacteria can also cause cavities. The tools you have at home are limited. We are equipped with all of the latest tools and technologies to see the areas of your mouth that are otherwise often missed and get them clean. In providing you with a thorough cleaning, we can help to keep your mouth healthy.

Your Cleaning

Dental cleanings are a fairly straightforward process. We start by scraping all surfaces of your teeth, removing plaque, tartar, bacteria and other debris from the surface of your enamel. We will also scrape between your teeth and along the gumline.

Once your teeth have been scraped clean, we then move on to polishing. We use a special dental polish, which contains abrasives, and our electric handpiece. The head spins, scrubbing your teeth to a beautiful finish.

Next, we floss your teeth. Even if you have already flossed once, an extra session will not do any harm. The flossing will help to remove any lingering polish and debris from your cleaning, along with any buildup that you may have missed. If necessary, your cleaning will be finished up with a fluoride treatment.

Benefits of Professional Cleanings

There are several benefits to a professional cleaning:
•  Cleanings, when combined with a regular at-home care routine, will help to prevent serious oral health issues like gum disease and tooth decay.
•  Scraping your teeth and polishing them helps to remove surface stains. You may notice that your teeth are whiter after a professional cleaning.
•  You will leave the office with fresher breath.
•  By helping to prevent gum disease, professional cleanings can help to prevent health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
•  By preventing oral health issues, you prevent the need for invasive, expensive treatments. This saves you both time and a significant amount of money.
